The art of Cape Adventures

Last year, Stewart Clifford Gallery invited me to display my art in a group show - my first art show ever. Well, it probably wasn’t my first ever, as I think my artwork was featured at one time in my grade school’s display case. It certainly was my first art show of the 21st Century. Here’s what happened.

Although my pieces are displayed in the gallery year round, a show shines a temporary spotlight on a featured artist or group of artists. I was excited for the chance to raise my profile and perhaps expand my audience, but first, I needed to create.

The show, focusing on local artists, was to be called “Cape Adventures.” I first received the invitation last June to participate in the October show, and I immediately accepted, while agreeing to create new works for it. Normally, four months is enough time to create several pieces, but at the time, I was in the midst of a home renovation project, and I had promised a custom piece to a commission buyer as well.

Despite the time crunch that Summer, I managed to produce several new works including mixed media, acrylic paintings and enhanced photographs.

Me with my new works at Cape Adventures art show at Stewart Clifford Gallery, Oct. 7, 2022.

Here are some details about my new works.

Greg Ayres. Street Light. 2022.

This painting was inspired by the afternoon light sticking to a row of Cape Cod houses.

Greg Ayres. Balcony Light. 2022.

This enhanced photograph features a balcony made of stained and painted basswood. The wooden dog cut out and plastic bird cabochons add life and movement.

Greg Ayres. Jetty Light. 2022.

This piece features my ever popular window theme applied to an acrylic painting, rather than an enhanced photograph. The window panes are painted basswood. Plastic bird cabochons add life and movement.

Greg Ayres. Lincoln Light. 2022.

This was my first completed automotive painting. It depicts one of my favorite vehicles, a 1961 Continental. It was also the first of my new works to find a buyer after the show.
